A Commitment to Sustainably Managed Forests

Yes, Geämi is a paper protective wrap and cushioning material, but unlike oil-based products, it is made from a renewable resource - trees. But there is more to Geämi's sustainability story than just renewably sourced raw materials.

We all know about the role forests play in removing CO2 from the atmosphere and the relationship between this and global warming issues. With more forests being clear cut to make way for agriculture or development, and because more than six billion people rely on trees for everyday wood products such as paper, the pressures on the world's forests have become staggering.

In an effort to ensure the future health of the world's forests, several third party certification programs have emerged to administer rigorous stewardship, management and sustainable forestry standards. These certification programs are designed to assure those who purchase wood products such as paper that the raw materials have been harvested and produced in compliance with sustainable forestry practices.

Even though only about 10% of the world's forests are currently certified under these programs, at Geämi we believe strongly that third party certification is critical to sustaining and ensuring the future health of our forests. So, we have made a commitment to only purchase the raw materials used in our non-recycled content Geämi paper from forest landowners and paper mills who have been third party certified. Currently, these raw materials are certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative. More land is certified to the SFI Standard in North America than any other standard, which means the SFI program offers a stable supply of quality forest products from legal, responsible sources. This certification standard is recognized and accepted in markets around the world.
