The Ideal Sustainable Cycle
Geämi Sustainable Protective Packaging is produced from paper, which
unlike
oil-based materials, is a renewable and sustainable resource. Our raw materials are grown in the soil,
converted to product, used,
recycled where
possible or composted and returned to the soil.
In these days of heightened concern over global warming, with the
desire to move away from oil-based products, Geämi should be seriously
considered as a viable and effective replacement to oil-based
protective packaging such as bubble or foam type wraps and polystyrene
peanuts.
 Yes, Geämi is a paper-based protective packaging material and unlike oil-based products, is made from a renewable resource - trees. But there is more to Geämi's sustainability story than just renewably sourced raw materials.We all know about the role forests play in removing CO2 from the atmosphere and the relationship between this and global warming issues. With more forests being clear cut to make way for agriculture or development, and because more than six billion people rely on trees for everyday wood products such as paper, the pressures on the world's forests have become staggering. In an effort to ensure the future health of the world's forests, several third party certification programs have emerged to administer rigorous stewardship, management and sustainabe foresty standards. These certification programs are designed to assure those who purchase wood products such as paper that the raw materials have been harvested and produced in compliance with sustainable forestry practices. Even though only about 10% of the world's forests are currently certified under these programs, at Geämi we believe strongly that third party certification is critical to sustaining and ensuring the furture health of our forests. So, we have made a commitment to only purchase the raw materials used in our non-recycled content Geämi paper from forest landowners and paper mills who have been third party certified. Currently, these raw materials are certified by the Sustainalbe Forestry Initiative. (Note: To read more about third party certification programs, please visit our Resource Page.) RECYCLABLE  You often see oil-based plastic packaging materials touted as "environmentally friendly" based solely on the claim that these materials can be "reused". While it makes sense for shippers to reuse these materials, in reality we are just sending along our non-recyclable "trash" for someone else to deal with. At the end of the day, most of these materials eventually end up in a landfill somewhere.  Geämi offers you and your customers a protective packaging material that is 100% recyclable through existing waste streams found in the curbside paper recycling programs available in most communities. RECYCLED CONTENT 
The Natural Kraft Geämi paper is available with recycled fiber content from post industrial waste (PIW). The Natural Kraft Geämi paper contains 60% PIW recycled content. Additionally, the white interleaf paper contains 20% PIW and the beige Interleaf paper contains 65% PIW.
"BIODEGRADABLE" vs COMPOSTABLE
 Of all the buzzwords used to describe a product's environmental benefits, "biodegradable" is perhaps the most misused. Due to the fact that there are no meaningful regulations regarding its use, many products have called themselves biodegradalbe without having any real basis for making the claim. Unfortunately, the term has frequently been applied to products that aren't biodegradable (such as plastics) and is likely not to be used for products that really are.Any product made from natural-based raw materials has the capability to biodegrade as long as it remains in a relatively natural form. Products made from man-made petrochemical compounds (such as plastics) generally do not have this capability because they contain combinations of elements that do not exist in nature, and therefore have no corresponding microorganisms to break them down. To differentiate which materials are degradable from those that are not, the term "compostable" has emerged to best describe this element of sustainability in protective packaging. Simply put, a product that is compostable is one that can be placed into a composition of decaying biodegradalbe materials, ultimately turning into organic matter within a short period of time - leaving no toxic residue and supporting plant life. Because Geämi is paper-based, the raw materials used remain in a relatively natural form. This ensures that Geämi Sustainable Protective Packaging is 100% compostable for communtities that offer public composting programs. Additionally, only non-toxic inks are used to print the Geämi Interleaf paper and thus, no toxic residue will be left behind during the composting process. |
